use in the kitchen

A hippo (plastic bag) placed in your toilet cistern will save 3 litres of water per flush
Over the past 30 years, the domestic use of water has increased by
over 65%.
Did you know a dripping tap can waste 5,000 litres of water every year? |

What can I do? Everyone
can help by becoming more aware of how much water they use. By taking
a few simple steps to make better use of water in our gardens and homes,
we can all help to make a difference. It is easy to make big water savings
in the kitchen, by making a few simple changes to your routine.
Washing machines and dishwashers - 15% of household water use Automatic washing machines and dishwashers are the two of the biggest culprits for water usage. A single washing machine cycle uses up to 100 litres of water (22 gallons) - and the average family uses their washing machine five times a week. That's 26,000 litres (5,720 gallons) in a year! Dishwashers use as much as 50 litres (11 gallons) of water in each complete cycle. Save water and electricity by waiting until there is a full load. Fewer loads mean less water and power is used |

Smart thinking Peeling
vegetables
Everyone cleans and peels their vegetables before cooking, but if you do this under a running tap, you are running precious, clean water down the plughole. A tap left running for 10 minutes wastes nearly 100 litres (22 gallons) of water - more than 3 showers! Put the plug in and use some water in the sink instead - an added bonus is that soaking vegetables makes them easier to peel.
Boiling the kettle
Filling the kettle to the brim wastes power as well as water. So only boil as much water as you need for a cup of tea or coffee. Always make sure the element is covered though. |
