At Home 8 - Nappies: the facts

Nappies: the facts

Disposable nappies account for 800,000 tonnes (4%) of household waste each year.

It takes 20 trees to keep a baby in disposable nappies for two years

Local Authorities spend 340 million each year collecting disposable nappies.

Thirty-one trees are cut down per second world wide to provide paper for the liners of disposable nappies.

What can I do?

Consider using terry nappies
Call the Real Nappy Network on 0121 693 4949 They can tell you how to contact the nearest company offering a home delivery cleaning service for reusable nappies. Alternatively, visit the Women's Environmental Network website.

Disposables are a very expensive and evironmentally costly solution for your baby.

A practical compromise is to use the weenies nappy system (see yellow box below)

How can I do it?

Did you know Simply Organic are offering a 10% discount for Public Sector employees for the Weenees nappy system with its degradeable inner pad and reuseable breathable pants.

Smart thinking

Crawley Borough Council paid for 400 real nappy starter packs to educate new parents about the environmental issues involved in child care.
