At Home 9 - Recycling

Remember the 4 R's:
Reduce - Reuse - Recycle - Re-think

Recycling: the facts

For every ton of rubbish we throw away at home, another 5 tons were created when it was manufactured and another 20 tons were created when the raw materials were collected.

Every year we use enough paper to cut down a forest the size of Wales.

The current UK recycling rate is 7.8%.
In Scandanivia the rate is closer to 60%, and in some British towns it has passed 40%

What can I do?

Recycle your rubbish
The following items can be easily recycled in most places:
Glass, Metal Cans (Aluminium and steel), Plastic Bags, Plastic Containers, Textiles and Fabrics, Domestic White Goods (eg Fridges), Envelopes, Clothes and Batteries.

Where is my nearest recycling center?
Ring your local council to see if there are local recycling facilities.

Buy recycled products

How can I do it?

Buy Recycled

Toilet Rolls, rubbish sacks, recycled plastic buckets, etc.

Refill schemes
Ask about refill schemes to use refillable bottles for body lotions and shampoos. The Body Shop provide a refill service on many products.

Smart thinking

Help from your council
Can your council ( go to the list of councils on our site) help you recycle? Find out whether your council runs a door to door collection scheme. If they don't, ask them why not.

The Directory Recycling Project

The Directory Recycling Project aims to increase the numbers of Phone Books and Yellow Pages recycled throughout the UK. The Project works in partnership with local authorities, recyclers, community networks and other interested parties to improve and promote opportunities for directory recycling. If you have a query about directory recycling please ring 0800 783 1592 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

Do I need these' things?'
When shopping, think: do I really need that?
