deforestationWood Products : the facts

Britain has lost 97% of its natural woodland cover over the last 300 years - 50% of that cover has been lost since 1945, and that trend continues.

Deforestation
The world's forests are being destroyed at a rate of twenty football pitches a minute. Such rapid deforestation releases approximately 1.8 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year.

What can I do?

When you buy wood for DIY or any product that has a wooden part (a handle, for instance) make sure it is marked with the FSC logo

When renovating, rebuilding or redecorating, always use wood marked with the FSC logo, (link to the or recycled and salvaged wood.

How can I do it?

Sainsburys Homebase, B&Q, Ikea and several other chainstores have committed to have only FSC marked products in stock.

Smart thinking

The Forest Stewardship Council check that wood comes from well-managed forests. It guarantees that the forest of origin has been independently inspected and evaluated to comply with an internationally agreed set of strict environmental, social and economic standards. The Forest Stewardship Council's Trademark is recognized worldwide.
