At School   2 - Safe Routes to Schools

At School : the facts

1 in 4 children now travel to school by car, creating 17% of the traffic between 9 and 10 and 10% of the afternoon rush hour. Most of these journeys are between 1 and 2 miles.

Up to one in five cars at peak time is doing the school run, four times as many as 20 years ago. (National Travel Survey, 1995, DETR)

On average, one in seven children suffers from asthma, and in inner city areas the rate is as high as one in three. (British Lung Foundation, 1997)

In slow moving traffic, pollution levels are higher inside cars than outside. (Environmental Transport Association Trust, 1998)

What can I do?

Cut down on the school run. Organise an informal taxi service and set up a school website to co-ordinate this with. Organise a 'walking bus' with parents taking it in turns to 'drive the bus.

Travelwise
TravelWise is the campaign to change peoples attitude to the use of their cars. The TravelWise campaign aims to make other methods of transport, such as cycling, walking and using public transport, a real alternative to the car. At the heart of TravelWise is the belief that individuals can make a difference; so that everyone may be part of the solution not the problem.
