Out Shopping 2 - Clothes for a better environment

Clothes : the facts

We spend £15 billion a year on clothing, but rarely consider the environmental impact of this expenditure.

Cotton accounts for 1/2 the world's clothing,
but as a crop it is sprayed with12%of the world's insecticides and 26% of the world's pesticides.

Over 300,000 American Farmworkers contract Pesticide-related illnesses each year.

What can I do?

Try Different Fabrics: Try out alternative fibres such as hemp and linen, or make sure you buy from a supplier that uses organic cotton.

How can I do it?

Companies such as Patagonia, and Green Fibres sell a wide range of clothes and shoes made from cloth and materials produced in an environmentally responsible fashion. They both run a mail order service.
