While Travelling 1 - Driving Habits
saving fuelDriving

Car drivers are exposed to up to three times theamount of vehicle-generated pollution compared to cyclists or pedestrians

A typical car emits 5 times its weight in
Carbon Dioxide emissions each year.

What can I do?

Below are some tips to help your car be more efficient and reduce your emissions.

1. Keep tyres inflated.
Under-inflated tyres use more energy.

2. Service your car regularly.
Old, dirty oil and clogged filters are a sure way to rob your engine of efficiency. A well-tuned car uses 9% less petrol, emits 42% fewer hydrocarbons and 47% less carbon monoxide than an untuned car. If 100,000 car owners got their cars tuned regularly, 41mil kg of CO2 can be eliminated from the atmosphere every year.

3. Travel light.
Luggage racks increase vehicle drag, and too much weight in the boot can cut your mileage.

4. If you are driving on a motorway
keep your windows shut. Opening a window creates drag and will lower your mileage.

5. Turn off your car engine
If you are stopping for more than 30 seconds. Restarting uses less petrol.

6. Catalytic Converter
Make sure your car is fitted with a catalytic converter

7. Unleaded Petrol
Switch to unleaded petrol

How can I do it?

Generally cars are not the most environmentally friendly option, but they are a necessity for many people who live in areas that offer infrequent public transport.
Try to buy a small new car with and an efficient engine and low CO2 emissions.
